thoughts on tppl batteries?

Hello all,
Looking for advise on the strengths and weaknesses of these batteries from people with experience with them. I am wondering if anyone has gone past the bleeding edge with these and they are just the new best versions of regular old lead acid.

I'm sorry, my brain can not hold that detail. You'll have to Google that.

I do know it is more expensive than even regular high end AGM's. Some models, incl. the 2150, can be had for less at Sears. Check their range an you will recognize the Odysseys that they sell under their own brand name.

If you are looking at 'different' batter systems have you checked out wet cell NiCad. Very high charge acceptance rates, can be run flat and stored flat with no damage, 20yr life span. They are bulky but because you can use the full capacity you only need half the bank size. They are used for standby power in hospitals and other critical industrial applications. I would be using them but cant get a small enough set for my boat (400 A/Hr) and they are expensive - but not compared to AGM's!

any ideas on the charging regime for ni cad wet cell,i currently have about 2000ah of them sitting in my shed,that i had planned to use on a solar instalation.
i have a couple of smart 60amp chargers,but not sure what type of battery to set the charger regulator at for this type of battery?

I agree, LFP can do the same high current that TPPL does, plus some. Availability is the only issue I think.

Search 'Nigel Calder TPPL' - what he hasn't written you don't need to know. Consider TPPL's a halfway house between LA and LifePO4's. Discharge down to 50% max 40% and charge acceptance rate's higher than most charging systems are capable of generating. Biggest challenge is adapting charging system to live with high charge acceptance rates i.e. over-heated alternators (if not derated), need for bigger cables, Poly-v belts (if done properly) higher amp rated circuit breakers etc - all of which are good things as the recharge rates compared to LA are much shorter. You still have the limited 'bandwidth' of about 40% (50-90% SOC) of LA batteries (unlike the LifePO4's which can be routinely discharged down to 20% SOC). I completed a 3 year circumnavigation using Odyssey 2150's (x2) in Sept 2013 - they are good, but wish I had LifePO4's. In some way's less complicated than LifePO4's, but if you optimize the charging regime and HW - the step to LifePO4's is less challenging.

FWIW, Interstate now makes a 99.99% pure TPPL AGM battery, so you can get TPPL and AGM in the same product.
