ahhh, the when. i would so wish we could in winter 2014/15 but alas, it may very well be 2015/16 winter (NH winter, SH summer) depends on income, what we manage to sell next summer.
we will not leave until we do not have monthly bills. then we can truely take our time, maybe chill in Brazil, until the correct time to go for it.
going to Antarctica is a life long dream of mine.

it looks great, BTW!
I purchased 2 engines new in the crate for $500.00 USD each at a Surplus Auction. They were from a BK sale of an over the road APU manufacture.

Ck out a publication called Boats and Harbors! Theres a lot of used gen sets and engines in it ! Theres one fella switching out older marine engines and gen sets from down in FLA, he has some pretty good prices on good running stuff! Just a thought, we just got a used genny from this publication a couple of mos ago! for 400 bucks for a 6.5 genny, needed clean up and a few new gaskets to stop some minor oil leaks, and an injector re-bild. Been running great so far !

Re: Talking out loud, generator build

So you are sort of going the cruise gen set route. Separate engine and gen coupled together. If our 10 KW gen set needs replacing I will size it by the motor HP not the KW. So will buy the biggest engine that can fit in the area/spot with a cruise gen like the one powered by the main 671.

Boats and Harbor is all advertisement , but mostly commercial than pleasure, but if you can adapt and think out size of the box there are some great bargains. I been looking at buying a portable 5 kw diesel gen set as back up just in case. If you are cruising in remote areas then have back up or better yet have back up for the back up. We are planning on heading north BC Canada and Alaska.

Let us know what way you are going as its usually not as cheap and easy of one might expect.

Re: Talking out loud, generator build

the only issue with going with a big engine is fuel consumption.
so if i go with this 8-11HP unit, then it should be about 0.3GPH at 1/2 load, less at lower load. unless i am running the AC it should only need switched on every now and then. i want to put it on an auto-start, so that when voltage drops to 12.3 it kicks on.
