Strange-Battery is dry

I put my boat on the hard in New England in August 2015. I charged batteries, topped them off and disconnected them. Now, 8 months latter I return to find 1 battery extremely low on water, below plates. I removed the battery thinking the housing was cracked. Any ideas? Thanks Kevin

You sure it was disconnected and not being charged?
Then you sure it was filled to begin with, cause like you , I don't see the electrolyte just evaporating

Yes I am sure on both of your questions.

This is why I am putting it out there.

Why only one battery?

Thanks

Re: Strange-Battery is dry

If a battery was full of electrolyte and electrically disconnected for eight months and not kept in a very hot environment and is has lost a lot of electrolyte, I can only see a leak as the only option.
Now were they all connected together, and were they all dead as doornails? If so , well then maybe one shorted battery discharged them all, heating up in the process and boiling out the electrolyte?

I have seen a battery or two in my life leak, but they had been dropped and had obvious cracks in the case and if you missed that, you couldn't miss all the leaking electrolyte

Thanks for scratching your head on this one.

No they were not connected together and no they were not dead.

I pulled the battery out and checked it for cracks.

I have filled it up and it is on charge and I will check the level again.

The battery was not in a hot environment .

Very strange

Thanks

Or you could just have a lemon of a battery. You may consider avoiding over thinking this. As a64 says, check the rest of the batteries in the bank. If they're OK, then bite the bullet. If not, you have more detective work to do on your entire electrical system.

edit --- written before your last post.

Re: Strange-Battery is dry

If something had physically failed and shorted out in that thirsty battery? I'd proceed with caution, in case it was going to fail in a more dramatic fashion, especially while charging. Could be that a "whisker" of metal was making an internal short and has since been consumed, fixing itself. But in general...things don't fix themselves. Don't leave it on the charger while your asleep, or no one is around, until you're sure it is safe.

FWIW.
