Stock Universal M25 Alternator with Balmar External Regulator ?

Hello,
I have a 2008 Universal M25 XPB with a stock (70amp) alternator. The boat has a Balmar 3-step regulator installed which is not currently hooked up to the alternator.
Someone told me that it is best to use a Balmar alternator with the Balmar regulator, but if possible I'd like to save that expense towards a wind gen. (I have 100w solar already.)

Has anyone had experience converting these alternators (tbh I'm not sure who the OEM is) to external regulation? Or know if there's any reason I should not attempt to hook this up to a Balmar regulator?

(The boat has 4 70ah AGMs that need to be replaced, I'll probably go with AGMs when replacing.)

Thanks!

Balmar doesn’t make their own alternators, so you can use the Balmar Regulator on any Alternator that uses an external regulator (or modified /w accessible Field terminal)*. Any Alternator Shop should be able to convert your OEM Alt to external regulation, for under $100 (includes cleaning & etc).
