Re: Sterling Alternator to Battery charger, dead Domestic bank

I am being offered two solutions in Lissabon.

Company A:
Victron

Requires major rebuilding of battery compartment.
https://drive.google.com/open?id=1K6...dvz9_jsvQ5HYMD

Pros: recommended by two Swedish cruisers.
Firm seems serious, they make electrical installations etc.
Cons: don’t want to rebuild. Might not even be possible.

Company B:

Trojan 24 AGM 76 Ah:
http://www.trojanbattery.com/pdf/dat...ata_Sheets.pdf

Cons: Googled and found the company - no idea if they’re good. It is this company:
https://www.lxbattery.pt
Seems to be a consumer oriented company? Selling small batteries such as AAA etc.
Pros: Trojan is good and fits without rebuilding! I don’t need their help much just want to make sure I don’t get old bad batteries.

Well Trojan's AGMs aren't any better proven than Victron's. Trojan I believe exiting the AGM business soon, again. Victron is an excellent company, should have decent support globally.

If those are really the only choices you have found,

(have you called the other makers suggested above, asked more thoroughly in Euro-centric places?)

then either will be fine, for at least 5 years if cared for properly.

Weigh up the box alterations issue, compare cost per AH and choose.

I must have missed something. Have you concluded the Sterling is fine and the issue is strictly battery related?

Yes 99% sure. Should be 2 posts really. Sorry.

Anyway, being offered Trojan AGM 24:

http://www.trojanbattery.com/pdf/dat...ata_Sheets.pdf

250 EUR each of they get to recycle my old GELs.

It’s a must buy but they want down payment by money transfer before I arrive. Don’t know anything about lxbattery.pt, this is a risk!

BTW, I misstated that I had zero ohms between start and house outputs. Meant to say there was no conductivity. I am electrically illiterate.

Again, a fresh thread costs nothing and might attract many more views, hundreds skipping this thread because the title is not relevant to their interests / context

with a better subforum relevant to your location, maybe a title like

Is lxbattery a good vendor? Any AGM in Portugal better than Trojan?

And spell out your box size details.

Also do the same in a half dozen other European sailing and or camper van forums.

If you'd done so earlier you'd probably have a much wider range of choices by now.

You don't need battery boxes for AGMs because they can't leak acid. Just make sure they are securely strapped down.

I would not bet on that. They can also boil and the over-pressure vents release then some acid too, same for GEL.

FLAs don't vent acid they only vent gas - same as FLAs. AGMs are pressurised to about 6 PSI so don't vent gas until that pressure is exceeded. Apparently you can shoot a bullet through them and they don't leak - all the acid is held in the glass matt that is only filled to 95% of the capacity of the glass matt. This is why they are considered non-hazardous cargo for transportation because they don't leak acid.

Arrived. Wonder what the extra connector on plus and minus is for?

https://drive.google.com/open?id=1hz...g_Skitd3JgA49f

They were all exactly 12.88 V on arrival. Will try a load on them, individually, parallel and indentical = scientifically.
