starter motor as wind gen...?

how about using a starter motor for a wind generator - figure the principal of reversing an engine to produce output should be do-able. I figure the rpm rate on a starter should be less than an alternator

Re: starter motor as wind gen...?

that is the beauty of a 12volt starter you "should" be able to use it as a generator and thank you for bringing it up now my wind generator problem is solved.

Re: starter motor as wind gen...?

Starter motors are designed for very short duty cycle operation. I'm not sure how long things would stay happily spinning at the 100% duty cycle operation of a wind generator. Even if you de-rate it significantly to keep it from over heating, the bearing and brushes may wear sooner than you'd like.

Re: starter motor as wind gen...?

...I've had a starting motor from an old Mercury O/B used successfully. These had permanent magnet fields. The Stator was REWOUND with smaller-gauge wire- an absolute requirement to get a useful Voltage out at the low revs of windmills.... I recall it put out around 14v/6 amps per 38" blade on a gust. The shaft bearings were just bronze bushings so it needed watching, per longevity....
