Source of "almost new" Yanmar alternators?

Hello everyone,

I used to have the details of an online place that would sell "almost new" original Yanmar "offtake" alternators that (according to the story) had been replaced with Balmar alternators by the dealers, and hence sold cheap in bulk by the dealers to this online store.

Now I need it but cannot find my notes with the name of the place. Can anyone remember the name of that place?

Thanks

C

Sorry don't know exactly where but if you don't get the exact answer you might try one of the marine engine suppliers that deals with Yanmar engines.

On the other hand, you do know that alternators are alternators? Yanmar does not have a special model made only by them that you must buy to work on a Yanmar engine. Depending on the output you want/need you can buy any Hitachi, Leece Neville or other well made alternator and use that. Any good auto alternator shop should be able to fix you up with a new, used or rebuilt unit.

Important Note: This does assume you don't have a gasoline engine requiring a spark shielded unit.

Thanks and sure, the Yanmars come with Hitachi alternators and the Hitachi part numbers are well known. The only reason to go this route to get them is that it is it the only way I know to get a real 80A Hitachi alternator for a hundred bucks. Alternatives are welcome..

In my limited experience there are lots of cheap alternators that look like Hitachis but do not work as well... I clarify that alternator shops do not help me much because my boat is in the BVI and have not found a good/affordable shop there..

Oh I see. You are stuck in the BVI. That does make a difference. What a hardship.

So are you living on the boat in the BVI or do you commute? Any chance to buy an alternator elsewhere and take it back to the boat in your luggage?

I wish I could spend more time there! I usually buy stuff in the US and take it as luggage or have it shipped to St John...There is a good mailbox place there... The place that I dealt with before but lost the details for is is a US-based business that ships to USVI by US Postal Service, which is ideal!

The alternator does not have a good reputation, its output is temperature limited and is generally quite low (hence the reason why they are so often replaced from new).

If you really want one I have seen lots on ebay.

A better solution is to replace it with a good alternator and keep the Yanmar one as a spare.

I think the place you are referring to is the following:

From: sales@mascostartersandalternators.com

The new original takeoff alternators are new Hitachi alternators that were taken off Yanmar engines before being put into service. They were replaced with 24 volt alternators. The alternators we currently have are painted Yanmar Grey and also come complete with Fan & Pulley.
The new aftermarket starters are replicas of the original Hitachi's Yanmar used.
