You can get the gory detail if you read together the literature from battery
manufacturers. Big picture is that in a flooded battery
you to measure specific gravity of the electrolite both to determine if you need to equalize at all and then every hour or so to determine if you need to keep it going.
If you do not understand what happens when you keep the equalization
going too long (ie until there is no more sulfate in the plates and the amps x volts you pump in are used to split water
into hydrogen and oxygen) then you may consider following the instructions and ne er doing an unattended equalization
