Around the world, there are, on average, about 8,000,000 lightning strikes a day or 100 times per second. Just thought I would throw this into the conversation.

Big number. But a couple more things to keep in mind are:

1] There are 510 million sq-km surface area to the earth to that averages out to 1 strike per 64 sq-km/d.

2] The vast majority of strikes are on land or near a coast. There are a several relatively significant though limited bodies of water that have elevated lightning incidence rates relative to most offshore areas. Unfortunately 2 popular cruising aread are among those: the Med and the Caribbean.

On the whole your chances of being near a strike are better offshore than on land.

Surprising that the Indian Ocean isn't a high lightening strike area.

Bay of Bengal is elevated.

All the offshore places with increased activity are warmer water zones.
