Smart Charger

I am in need of a smart charger to charge my batteries with out overcharging them. I need to know the cost and name of the best.
I am tired of every month having to buy new batteries or unhooking my batteries at my slip while under shore power.

Re: Smart Charger

What sort of use do your batteries get? If you're just sitting at the dock plugged in and baking them, consider unplugging and letting them be.....maybe add a small solar panel for maintenance.

If you have regular high current loads you may need a larger better charger than if you're just leaving them charging for maintenance.

Or, just adjust the charge voltage down when not aboard. Maintaining a constant high charge voltage with little load will evap electrolyte and ultimately damage the batteries.

I adjust my solar regulator down to 13.2 for storage...same batteries for over a decade now.

Re: Smart Charger

Well first I have solar panels and wind gen. charging the batteries. And they do a good job keeping them charged. Like I said I am looking for a good smart charger that will keep my batteries charged up and cut off when batteries are charged up and not over charge them. I will be moving aboard my boat next month and have to replace my old charger with a smart charger.

Do you currently have an old transformer type? These are indeed not very smart and will bake batteries. Really best just for one time charging of a start battery.

Re: Smart Charger

so you have 2 banks? one start and one house. house is 2 golf carts.

if you are going to be living on it get a dry charger. probably 30-40a or so.

most chargers today are smart and would be fine.

I've been putting a bunch of these in
ProNauticP Series | ProMariner

2 golf carts is pretty small for a 38' boat. are you draining them too low?

Re: Smart Charger

This is a question for all

How do you know when your batteries are full. ????????

The only way to know is to be able to rest them, then the voltage
Will tell you.

The best way is to buy a smartgauge, then you don't have to rest
Them
The smartgauge will tell you when 100%
This allow you to tune your charging regime to the best possible.
The gauge is self tuning & will learn your batteries & will
continue to tune its self as your batteries age so is always
accurate
I cannot recamend the smartgauge highly enough.

I have no connection whatsoever with the manufactures
or agents
I merely own one & use it
