Re: Shore Power and 110v Wiring

I have to go along with Charlie and the others that have suggested you are in over your head. 110V AC is dangerous and can cost you your boat or your life.

I really appreciate you wanting to DIY and looking for help on a forum is a great way to do it. But you are coming in with admittedly little to no knowledge and asking others to do all the work for you.

Take a little responsibility and initiative to do the basic learning first so you at least know what to ask and can understand the terminology. If budget is an issue go to the library, it's free. Then come back and ask away.

Sorry. Guess I was not very clear. If I may, let me offer an analogy.

You want to ask questions about War and Peace. So you go to a Harvard English professor and ask him to explain the book but you have never read the book and in fact don't even know how to read

So, before you go to the professor, go get a basic book on the ABCs, go home and learn how to read, then read the book. Then, when you have the ability to ask a question about a complicated subject and can understand the answer, go back to the expert to ask questions.

more like, while reading the book i enjoy talking to others who have read it in order to get their opinions and ideas.

honestly....

i have an electrical panel with 6 switches. i don't feel it's necessary to know everything an electrical contractor would know in order to fix it. if there's a 500 page book on electrical wiring, theory, application etc...how much of that info applies to my situation?

it's VERY frustrating to come to a community forum where there are literally thousands of years combined experience, ask a few questions and be told repeatedly that i don't know enough about the subject i'm interested in learning about.

kind of a catch 22 i'd say.

Re: Shore Power and 110v Wiring

btw..just like to add..

i haven't turned a single screw on the electrical panel yet. i'm not going to until i fully understand what needs to be done and why.

so if anyone else wants to tell me that i'm going to kill myself, don't bother...

if you have a cell phone that takes pictures, then do it and email them to yourself. Then post them on Google web picasa and link them here. That is what I do. Pictures explain a lot where words fail.

You came to a forum where there are experts who can offer expert advice. You said in your very first post that you knew nothing about electricity and demonstrated that fact by some of the questions you asked.

The members here are not trying to be rude or not not answer your questions. Quite the contrary, they are trying their best to help you and possibly save you from serious harm.

110V electricity can kill you. Kill you. It is not an area for someone with no knowledge to mess around. Asking questions on a forum when you can't even understand the answers is not safe.

To safely work on 110V AC you need to have at least some understanding of the subject, how to use a VOM and basic wiring techniques for boats. It is not safe nor practical to try to do this on the internet. For your safety, the safety of anyone on your boat and your neighbors you need to learn more about what you are doing before trying to troubleshoot a complicated system on the internet.

And you cannot depend on looking at the colors to get it right. If you are seeing loose wires then obviously someone has been messing with the system and no telling what they have done and whether or not it is now wired correctly.

Very sorry you are frustrated but electricity is not easy and simple. You just can't say put a red wire here and a green wire there and everyone's happy.

Please, do some study and reading. Go draw a diagram of your system. Borrow a camera and take pictures. Then come back and ask questions and I promise you will have electrical experts standing in line to help. And you don't have to memorize a 500 page technical manual to learn the basics.

Re: Shore Power and 110v Wiring

sailorchic pretty much explained a lot of what i needed to know about electrical panels and wiring for a boat vs a house.

that helped a lot - it was the kind of info i was hoping to get.

as i said in a previous post. sometimes it's beneficial for me to play stupid so that i can get basic info. i do know a bit more than i let on to begin with, but clearly there is a lot i don't know. That's why i've been trying to get info here.

why bother with 500 words explaining - in detailed and well thought out analogies - why someone is wrong in their approach to learning rather than 500 words with detailed well though out analogies on the basics of the subject the querent seeks information on?

i'm done with this thread until i choose to post some pics and/or drawings

My father was a very wise man. He taught me a lot of useful things.

Like don't try to teach a pig to sing. The pig won't thank you for it and the results won't be pretty if you succeed.

Re: Shore Power and 110v Wiring

are you saying you come from a line of pig trainers?

what does that have to do with the issue at hand?

Because you can't learn electricity in 500 words or less.

Some of the most knowledgeable people in the industry took their time and tried to offer sound advise which you choose to ignore and respond with attitude.

Good luck.
