This article seems to indicate they would use 100V DC for Home solar installations. I suspect we will see more of this and eventually we will see a high voltage DC standard for server farms and off grid stuff. Before I have heard alot of 48VDC as a standard talk, as it avoids many issues and counts as low voltage for a lot of standards. But it suffered from big current drops in distances longer than 25 yards,thus unusable for city usage. It was Tesla that introduced AC and the result is the grid we all depend on today. The game changer is solar... if you put solar panels on your home, and you put a battery in your home, then you just need to get the power from the battery to your appliances, you don't need to have power lines.

Not so sure about DC air conditioning for boats, a small 4200 BTU unit will take about 25 to 30 A to run on 12V DC, this heavy load will abuse the charging system on any small boat, to the contrary a unit AC/ DC will run on AC in shore power, plus will deliver 48A of smart charging to keep the batteries in top shape.
I was able to cool my Luhrs 40 Open salon without any problem, plus my helm unit operates under alternator 12V under way.

Very interesting...Is on/off or also inverter meaning the compressor can run at whatelse % of the load?

Webasto and truck/bus air conditioning still works 12 or 24v dc, only need to replace an hatch for heat exchanger...

Compressor is not an inverter type, they are claiming to be working on one but at the this time is on and off.

Just for an example, Prius Airconditioner is DC, and has a brushless, variable speed motor to turn the compressor.
DC / AC doesn't really matter as either is convertible to the other without too much loss, efficiency is what matters.
If a DC Airconditioner isn't significantly more efficient than an AC one, there isn't much to be gained.
