Re: Salt Water Crackling Noise?

i only seem to hear the crackling when i'm anchored in a current. leads me to think that it's merely suspended solids of various kinds hitting the hull as they drift by....

Re: Salt Water Crackling Noise?

The first night after I launched my boat, I heard it. Due to the extreme state of sleep deprivation and total exhaustion, I was sure that the boat was breaking up. The next morning, my fellow boatbuilders had a good laugh, then shared the reason with me. It, too, was in Marina Del Rey, in 1978. Boat is still floating, joyfully. Cleaner shrimp, spotfin croakers, and other critters make for great entertainment. Then, there's the occasional bouncing off the hull by a sea lion chasing a fish, now THAT'S a surprising sound in the dead of night. Really gets your attention.

Is that the name of the fish I hear in summer? Spotfin croakers?

Snapping shrimp, we get those in Croatia as well. Its very disconcerting until you work out it's not the boat breaking up or the batteries boiling. Off Queensland and Northern Australia, they are so noisy they interfere with Royal Australian Navy sonars. It's the marine equivalent of cicadas.

They sound like a bunch of frat guys beer belching. Like the frat guys, they think it makes them attractive to the females. Must work for them.

Lovely way of putting it!
We heard this loudly in the Gippsland Lakes (southern part of Australia) when we chartered a boat for the very first time a few decades ago. Worried us at the time LOL.

We are currently sitting in an anchorage in Greece and the "cicadas" are at it as I am typing this. Nice sound. Brings back memories of our first time in a yacht .

Re: Salt Water Crackling Noise?

Google "Pistol" shrimp - you should find a fascinating video of them actually making the noise. They snap their main pincer so rapidly it creates a vacuum, which is then replaced by water. Apparently much like a plane breaking the sound barrier. The shock wave stuns their prey/food source.
Millions of the little buggers down there - make quite a racket!

Re: Salt Water Crackling Noise?

(Probably not this) Once I started diving rebreathers I was amazed how loud the parrot fish are as they crunch the coral. Like I said, not likely what you hearing up on the east coast, but really cool.

Re: Salt Water Crackling Noise?

Was going to say polyestermites, but too slow. We call then "gribblies" out here, well, some of us do.Just sounds like something gribbling away on the hull. Very cool sound, love them.

Coops.

Re: Salt Water Crackling Noise?

It's the krill. They get really loud when you haul the boat out of the water when the hull's really dirty, but not for long.

Love the You Tube! I don't hear the shrimp where I am now. Ensenada had tons & were so loud it was hard to sleep. A friend's son (family was new to sailing) thought they had rats in their bilge! So funny!!

We do have the croaker here in Marina del Rey. They are super loud in May when it's mating season. It was a bit disconcerting though when we caught one on our hook at Catalina. I pulled it up to take the hook out when it looked me in the eye & croaked. It freaked me out...but we cooked him for dinner anyway. They are good eating!

I love seeing the phosphorescence when flushing the head at night. It's one of my favorite things! It's like magic.
