Rutland 503 / 504... ?

Anyone have one or have any experience with them?

The apology-to-all-in-the-pacific thread has got me thinking about non-offensive wind generator that does not take over then entire stern. I really like the small wing span of these generators, (Turbine diameter of 20 inches) and wonder if the low output might increase the time between charges enough to make it worth while.

I know the stated output, and have cruised and lived with charging. 60w peak would make a real difference in my charge schedule, especially where the trades blow.

Not familiar with the model you show, but am familiar with older 910 model. Have worked on all types, and Rutland gets the highest marks from the sailors I have met. IMHO

The small one is too small - just good enough to keep the battery in shape if it is already full up or to run VERY limited loads (1A at 12 Volts).

The bigger units is practically silent. But it does not give more than 3-4A. Some people love them some hate them - and they seem to have no technical issues - been on the market like for ages now.

I have only seen these on moored boats that appear to be mostly unused, waiting for their owners to remember that they are sitting in the harbor with topped up batteries eager to go out for a sail.

I had a 913 on my last boat. it was great cause it was VERY quiet as opposed to those screaming air marines. I could not live next to one of those suckers. When the wind is up, it is noisy enough on a sail boat without having that banshee reinforcing the message.

HOWEVER the Rutland was no where near as efficient as AM's. Most times it only put in 3 amps, maximum I ever saw was 9 amps at 30 kts of wind (not boat speed)
On my new boat I spent the bucks on an extra solar panel. In northern Oz, I think solar will give me more bang for my buck, especially as we seem to be in a state of perpetual drought down under.

The 503/4 is a top-up type charger for weekend use - i.e. the battery is charged by the time you return next weekend.

It is useless for cruising.

If you need serious amps, then the KISS or the D400 provide the best options. They have large blades that are designed to turn slowly, but produce a large charge. Thus they are quiet, but take a lot of space.
