Refrigerator Longevity

This isn't really electrical, but I couldn't find a better place to put it.

Anyway, I'm wondering if my Norcold ice box conversion will last longer if I keep it powered up (on shore power), or turn it off when not in use. I worry that if I turn it off for months (during winter), the refrigeration system internals might suffer in some fashion (Corrosion? Sediment? Gumming?). I notice that the beer fridge in my garage has been running constantly since the harvest gold/avocado days, and still works perfect, so I'm thinking that they're not prone to wear out.

What do you folks do?

Re: Refrigerator Longevity

Have the Norcold unit in our Ontario32. Have used the ac side dockside without snags and ditto for the dc side. We installed it 5 years ago and overwintering in Ontario Canada for 6 mos of usually bitter weather has not been a problem. We usually set it at #3 and achieve 40 deg F during the summer. A little power hungry but have wind and soler to feed the bank. Insulation and keeping it full are part of the process.

Re: Refrigerator Longevity

I keep my alder baubor on shore power 24/7/365. Secret is to keep it full all the time- so I have a ton of cold packs in it. This keeps the compressor run time and effort to a minimum, but keeps the unit active to maintain the seals and equipment.

Re: Refrigerator Longevity

Good point - mine is essentially empty, just some cans of pop. I'll put some stuff in it that will stay cold. I had a feeling that sitting dormant for months on end wouldn't be good for the refrigeration components. Thanks!
