Real World Experience with Mase 4KW, Yanmar.

About to do my first on-the-hook trip... and I've read the manual, etc. that came with my Mase 4.0 Yanmar powered Genny.

Some questions.

1. What are some good things to bring as far as spare parts? Impeller is on my list... anything else? I'm thinking maybe oil?

2. What is real-world run time, say at half load? (GPH Diesel)?

Any other ideas, thoughts, advice?

Presumably PetePetePete has started (and perhaps completed) his first on the hook trip by now but for others reading this historical thread, he could have taken spare v belts (if any), spare fuel filters and fuel hoses.

Note that some Yanmar's don't use zincs - check your manual.

Run time - usually an hour in the morning and once in the evening. The trick is to have a large charger > 100 amps or have 2 units of 60 amps.

My biggest problem is getting enough load on the genny. Battery charging alone is too light a load. Besides the usual battery charging I will schedule doing the cooking - a table top induction cooker, electric kettle, making hot water, and often simply just running the air conditioning.

If there is too much load on the genset, it would struggle and give up. I try to go for 50% load based on amp.

My friend who had a NL had to clean out the elbow which was clogged with carbon build up due to light loads. So they told me to get the smallest genset I can find.

Mine is 4.5 more like 3.5kw for continuous load. The genset will struggle on higher load.

My inherited Mase 4kw sucs! No heat exchanger-- uses air fan and seawater, no alternator --and no 12 Volt DC output , plus the E-1 light comes on saying Low oil pressure and unit stops--- but Miami factory reps say change oil filter which unbeveleably is located in and on engine drain plug..change it and old "E-1 light still comes on sucs!.. plus zinc is located on "radiator and must be changed every 2 months!!. unit only has 82 hours....sucs!!

I have 2 genuine air cooled Yanmar diesels and a Chinese quiet generator set with an L100 clone.
The Yanmar air cooled diesels are excellent engines very well designed, durable and easy to work on.
My Chinese quiet diesel generator rated at 6500 watts has however proven otherwise, this generator failed at 41 hours due to a failure of the small bearing end of the camshaft. The cam bearing surface was not hardened and wore causing the engine to shut down due to low oil pressure from metal contamination of the filter.
It has taken me 2 years to find (Chinese) replacement parts. The engine is back together and currently running fine however I have little faith in it.
