Re: PV market is shut off to China

It seems to me the west has been in a trade war with China for about 20 years, so far China has been the only side fighting.

Re: PV market is shut off to China

Somehow there seems to be a feeling of some great chinese Conspiracy. To me it appears that they are simply being better businessmen than us in the west.

We are moving more and more towards free markets- which is sensible and naturally means that some countries wont be competative on certain products. The Wests RnD Ying to the asian cheap labour Yang.

As we head into the Asian Century, the west will slide back somewhat. China will be the worlds biggest economy in 20 years and is already outsourcing. Its natural that items from china will become more expensive. Soon (a decade or so) we will find cheap boating products coming from less traditional sources - Vietnam or Cambodia instead of China.

more backward thinking on the part of the powers that be pandering to the lobbying of energy companies, selling their black tobbacco, cheap pv panels, wind power and other sustainable sources of energy are the way forward.

Yep, Obama finally called their bluff when they were flooding the market with cheap tires. Looks like he has again. Bravo!

They are good business men, but much is financially supported by the govt , worse is the pollution etc. A level playing field would be nice...
I really cant find dog snacks that arent made in china, and the chinese ones are killing dogs due to heavy metals and other problems. I figured it out the other day, steak is about the same price as dog treats!

I recall reading some months ago how DM solar panels escaped tariffs by manufacturing their cells outside China although the panels were assembled in China. The Great One's action will cause some financial pain although I doubt the tariffs will have any significant immediate financial impact.

Foggy
I think that we should see an immediate financial impact as this is just the start of something a lot bigger ...With the world in the same position as it was at the start of WWI(Russia bound by alligance / Prinsepe kills Arch Duke/starts WWI , Flash forward 2012 Russia aligence to Syria & Iran/Iran is to be denied the capability to build a nuclear bomb/China swore Tiawan will never claim independence ,if so they face war/invasion!/China and Russia big buddies again/America swore to protect Tiawan and Japan/Japan and China have very serious historic troubles....When Mitt Romney said he would create jobs, he was going to label China a currency manliputator from day one and that would have been the "come out swingging scenerio".Something must be done about the way China has been playing ball. China is feeling the pressure right now in real time ,there economy is going to continue to grow at aprox. 6-7-8 % over the next few yrs but, the good ole days of "Socialism with Chinese Characteristics" is coming to an end!(New pharse coming out of the most recent political party congress meetings in China now is, "Socialism with Chinese Characteristics ", they think that it is going to be business as usual)...

Sounds like the smart move is to feed your dog steak.

Quite the opposite imho. The US and west have been dictating trade agreements to developing nations for decades.

Its strange that in the west we have this god given expectation that we can sell what we like when we like, but when other countries have control of a market we get all upset.

Re: PV market is shut off to China

I read some of this elsewhere a few weeks ago and called the people we have been getting our panels from thinking prices were going to go way up. He told me that their current prices already reflect the new policies.

12 volt panels from them had gotten as low as $1.00 a watt and now are about $1.45 a watt. Sure that is higher but, how many people bought at the $1.00 a watt price? At $1.45 a watt that is still a lot better than even 2 years ago and way, way better than when I bought a 40 watt panel for over $400 about 15 years ago.

One way they can get around the tariffs is they don't apply as much to cells as far as I can tell, just complete panels, so some are getting around the major hit by assembling the final panels here. I wonder if some of the panels that are often touted as good marine panels actually get the individual cells from China.

Also if you move away from panels that are designed for 12 volt applications you can still find panels for less than a $1.00 a watt and these could be use for 12 volt applications with a MPPT controller.

Guys... Although everyone is so far behaving, politics is verboten here on CF. Please keep on the topic of PV dumping, or the thread will be locked.
