Phasor Marine Generators

I have an opportunity to purchase a Phasor Marine 3.5kw generator at a very good price. But (always the but ) it is a 1997 model with a lot of hours (total unknown). The owner is telling me all it needs is a "top end" job. Not being familiar with the Kubota engine I am not sure as to what I would be getting into. Any ideas/comments?

Or any idea where I might look for rebuild parts?

The Kubota diesel engine itself is used for all sorts of applications including tractors, boat engines and generators. For the engine rebuild I would try a tractor dealer, bound to be cheaper than a genuine marine mechanic.

Either way, I would get a quote for the "top end job" from a Kubota mechanic of some kind, marine, tractor or whatever. Double that quote. Add it to the price of the used generator and if that total isn't 25-50% less than a new unit, walk away.
