Phasor 3.5kw Generator Shuts Off

We just bought 42 Catalina with 3.5 KW Phasor generator. Ran great since Monday but started shutting off after 20 min or so tonight at Key West anchorage. Cleaned water filter and line. Still shuts off. Any advise?
Thanks in advance!

Check the impellar. Could be an automatic thermal shut-off feature.

After filter and line cleaning is there plenty of water pumping out with the exhaust? With the new boat, could it be that you aren't familiar with the amount of water in the effluent at proper cooling? With the strainer cover off does water vigorously flow in when the seacock is opened? Is the impeller turning properly with all blades present? ......and sure, that oil check is a good plan. All this done?...then what about the heat exchanger blocked? Take care and joy, Aythya crew

Re: Phasor 3.5kw Generator Shuts Off

I worked on this generator over and over again on a 424 I was delivering...

... had to troubleshoot 4 different failures in a 3 week time period.

Here is what I recall from that experience.

I suspect the thermal time out issue is right, must be at least a partial flow of cooling water, as the normal run time (from cold) to overheat is ~ 5-7 min... verified a couple times.

BTW, once you fix this, get an extra belt, AND an extra regulator capacitor to put in your spares kit... Need not be a 'Phasor' branded cap, better to mount it outside the gen head so as to avoid all the heat (that is what makes them fail).

Oh, and the 'self bleeding' feature may not always work as advertised (depending on your install). If not, just remove the return line from the injector and let the pump click over for about half a pint of fuel... then the bubbles will come....

Could be a fuel pressure issue. Check that the fuel separator bowl is full when the motor cuts out. It could be that the level is getting too low and starving the motor of fuel.

Maybe it's one of those new smart generators that won't run in an anchorage at night so as not to disturb others.

LaVieSB... Welcome to CF!
Another failure point for that genny is the run solenoid.. They are very finicky about their grounds. +1 on an extra belt!

I'm in KW for another day if I can help... Already stowed the dink, so you'll have to come to me though.

Re: Phasor 3.5kw Generator Shuts Off

You have air in the cooling water. Bleed the air out of the cooling water and it won't cavitate and overheat. This has worked on a 7.5 kw Onan and a huge genset on a seagoing barge that lifted a giant bow ramp. Trust me

Jonathan - how do you bleed air from the line? We added oil and coolant. Still have issue. Don't have the right socket for impeller, so we're trying everything else. Will likely find a marina around Channel 5 tomorrow. Thanks!

Re: Phasor 3.5kw Generator Shuts Off

This may sound stupid, but on the Onan I "patted" it out at the petcock. Air in water wants to rise, so coax it out any way you can think of. I didn't bleed the air out of the barg's huge genset; a mechanic did; but in a few minutes. Same result: no more cavitation- no more rise in temperature-happy generator

Re: Phasor 3.5kw Generator Shuts Off

sorry, you did realize I am referring to the Fresh Water that cools the sea water not the raw water cooling. I only know this from experience, but if you think about it, if there is air in this closed system it gets squirted through the impeller and creates even More air each cycle
