option other than Aqua Signal 43

My boat has the original Aqua-Signal 41 deck level non-LED lights, 31 years old and going strong (although I did replace the lenses once). I sprung for an Aqua-Signal masthead tricolor/anchor, but I only run deck level lights when I'm under power so don't really care about energy consumption for them. So based on your usage pattern deck-level LED nav lights might be putting money where you don't need it.

Just make sure that whatever you pick meets the distance visibility requirement for your length vessel.

It's for a friend in SA . He put cheaply Chinese ones on two years ago and they haven't held up .

I have aqua signal and they seem to hold
Up well, though they came on my boat so I didn't have to spring for them .

If you already have the light housings, you can just replace the bulbs with LED. I did this with my Aquasignal masthead and bow lights. Just remember that you have to use red and green LED lights (not white). I had a local fellow make mine and they are MUCH brighter than the original bulbs.

One MUST be careful when substituting LED bulbs into existing non-LED fixtures. This works fine in white/clear fixtures but NOT in colored/red/green ones.

The problem is that LEDs emit light in a very narrow range of frequencies/colors. If the LED is NOT matched to the lens, the lens can (and will) filter out any light that does not match its color. Thus, light output can be seriously degraded.

Moreover, not all reds are red, not all greens are green, at least as far as light transmission is concerned.

As a result, it is very important that LED bulbs be matched to the specific fixture. There are good LEDs made for most major nav light manufacturers, including Aqua Signal. Just make sure the LED you buy is rated for your specific fixture/series.

There are LED bulbs that match the red, green and white frequencies and some that don't. Read the packaging carefully.

What length is your boat? It makes a difference in which lights are legal for your boat.

It is legal and can make a difference with your safety to put lights that have a greater range than what is the minimum range required for your boat.

At sea, one mile lights are a joke....in my opinion.
