Re: New Multi-stage regulator

Multi-Stage Regulators | Balmar

I can't seem to copy from the page above so I pasted the link. Check it out.
The ARS-5 has a maximum field current of 9 amps. Most of the other balmar regs will put out 15. I'll bet you an IPA that your big ole Powerline needs 20 amps of field to reach full power. It's beefy as all get out, but not particularly efficient. With 9 amps of field, the best output you can get is 70. So the pot is giving you more field current in order to make more output amperage.

You could get a reg with higher field capacity, a more efficient alt, or just keep doing what you're doing. Nothing is broken, and your alternator doesn't seem to overheat, so...

Yeah you're right, I thought it should have been as well. I'll go through the programming again to double check my settings. It's possible that something never got saved or that I made a change where I shouldn't have.

Thanks for your thoughts.

Re: New Multi-stage regulator

My last post isn't here. Said needed to be moderated probably because it had a link to Balmar.
What it said:
The ARS-5 only puts out 9 amps of field. I bet your Powerline requires 20 amps to reach full power. My 612 puts out 15.
Your pot adds field current.

You could
1) get a higher amp regulator
2) get a more efiicient alt
3) keep doing what you're doing (my choice)
Nothing is broken, and your alternator doesn't overheat (does it?)

Fair winds

Re: New Multi-stage regulator

No, there's no problem with heat and I went into the advanced settings and changed the field threshold for bulk/Absorption/float from the default 65% field output to 90% (96% is max). That seems to have negated the need for the pot so I just turned it off. We were just out motoring around though. We'll see how it does without the manual override next time we make water.

Thanks again eh

Ron
