Need Help Rewiring a Sailboat

Hello,

I need someone who could spend a few hours to advise and show me how to rewire a sailboat properly.
She's docked at Riverland in Ft Lauderdale.
The batteries, charger, components are in place.
I can be reached at 561-755-7345.

Regards,
Michael

re: Need Help Rewiring a Sailboat

Hi Michael,

Can't give you a hand, although sure would if I was in your area. Here's a wonderful source of information you might obtain:

Amazon.com: Boatowner's Mechanical and Electrical Manual: How to Maintain, Repair, and Improve Your Boat's Essential Systems eBook: Nigel Calder: Books

His writing can be over the top on information, but I believe his advice is invaluable. I use it as a reference on my boat.

Good luck!

re: Need Help Rewiring a Sailboat

Michael - If I was in the area I would love to help.

Why do you need to rewire?
Do you have the basic skills or are you looking for labor?
Does the whole boat need wiring and equipment or what?

Wiring is actually not that tough if you are careful and methodical. You need to make a solid plan and then stick to the plan. The actual mechanical skill is just learning how to strip wire and make crimps. Pretty easy stuff.

There are several threads going right now about rewiring.

Re: Need Help Rewiring a Sailboat

I'm planning on rewriting my yacht as well. Although it is only 27ft there is a birds nest of wires behind the switch panel. I have Nigel calders book, sailboat electrics simplified and boat owners illustrated electrical handbook. After reading them I have got my head around it. I'm Starting with the house and starter battery set up first and then will go system to system. Also draw out a plan so you can cover all the systems. I done that with the with the battery and switching and made it a lot easer to see then trying to follow wires as your doing it.

But in short having a read of some boat electrics books and take your time.

Re: Need Help Rewiring a Sailboat

I recommend using experesssch to create wiring diagrams.

It is free and flexible although like most schematic tools has a limited library of specialized icons. I have created a small library of them and am willing to share.

Here is the work in progress of my boat's new schematic.
