My Panel Assault Begins
Started my electrical project today. Predictably alarming things were found. Though I thought I'd share this gem with all of you.
This is a single wire that was the main feed for the fuse box. As you can see on one end it has been split into two pieces and each "tail" was then crimped.
And you know, since that wasn't bad enough, on the other end you can see the half inch of bare wire between the crimp and the shielding.

That way if one crimp fails the other still works!

Award for positive thinking in the face of electrocution.

Re: My Panel Assault Begins
I found another. I've given them a name. Two headed dragons.

Re: My Panel Assault Begins
After railing against this sort of thing in my blog I had a reader comment and say someone did this to reduce electrical noise. Anyone ever heard of something like that?

In this case, I expect the termination was split into 2, because the PO didn't have a large enough lug and/or crimper for the cable.

Gord,
Those were my thoughts on it as well. I'm okay with temp emergency repairs but I cannot fathom why someone would leave a crimp like this hiding in the depths of a boat. It had obviously been there many years.

Re: My Panel Assault Begins
I haven't exactly been keen on keeping much of anything left over from the previous wiring. I might leave the runs in the conduit between the panel and mast, but that's about all thats staying.

Re: My Panel Assault Begins
I believe that the commenter on your blog was mistaken. It would be for noise if the cable had a braided shield. Here is a website that shows the proper way to terminate the shield. AeroElectric Connection - Terminating Shielded Wire
That does not appear to be the case with your wiring.

No it certainly doesn't. I'm familiar with some sorts of paired wires that must be terminated separately for noise, but I didn't know if there were cases where an individual conductor should be done like this. Thanks for the clarification. I believe the commenter must have been mistaken as well.

Re: My Panel Assault Begins
I guess realistically, it works as well as one larger connector. Just not very tidy!

Re: My Panel Assault Begins
We used to split conductors like that all of time to get higher current capacity in a connector. We repaired and made cables for high power professional photographic flash equipment. However, each bare conductor was sleeved with Teflon tubing and then one larger diameter heat shrink applied over the point where the main insulation ends. Works well and there were no bare wires. You can't have bare wires at 900V and more than enough current to stop your heart!!

Re: My Panel Assault Begins
Besides it not having heatshrink in the right places, don't think it would hurt anything. Better than trimming strands to fit the one undersized fitting have. In other words, coulda been worse imo.
