Modification of Boom Box :-)

Modification of Boom Box :-)
I want to play some music in my new 10 ft yacht. (yes I said ten ft)
Anyway the boat dashboard is too small to house an in dash radio music player like an automotive type in dash radio.
So I have found a rechargeable Boombox that reads mp3 music from a USB memory stick or memory chip. What wanted was a music player to plug into my 12V cigarette lighter. That kind of player does not exist. What I did find was this Boombox that has lithium rechargable battery with a charger for 110 volt plug in. According to the manual the transformer/charger outputs 13.5 volts. My thought is cut off the transformer and splice in a male plug to go into my 12V cigarette lighter. Does anyone think this will work? Define work.
1. allow me to play music
2. would this connection be enough to also recharge the lithium battery ?

I do not have a cell phone. Does anyone have a better solution to play recorded mp3 music than this modified boombox? My boat motor system does use a std car type 12V battery.

Re: Modification of Boom Box :-)

You could use something like this:
WINGONEER Mini Bluetooth Hi-Fi Stereo Audio AMP Amplifier Bass Booster MP4 12V Support FM/MP3/TF/USB/DVD for Car Motorcycle

https://www.amazon.com/WINGONEER-Blu...HRKFC8739X7RA4

I have on in my Garage and it works fine for that. This has a 12v input and uses Micro SD cards or Bluetooth or just listen to the radio...

Re: Modification of Boom Box :-)

13.5 may be a bit high if you have a standard flooded bank, unless you had the engine running or solar really going for it.

I've done what you propose with stuff that takes 12v and it's worked fine

Re: Modification of Boom Box :-)

plug in to recharge and while playing.

Well before you stop playing, unplug it so not full in storage.

Not ideal but for a cheap gadget should be fine.

Otherwise look for a DC-DC "car charger" that puts out 13.5V exactly, "universal" one should come with 20 tips one will match

Re: Modification of Boom Box :-)

Welcome to the forum.

Yes, chopping off the 120VAC to 13.5VDC wall wart and replacing that with a car cigarette lighter plug should work fine to recharge the boom box.

The engine battery will provide about 13.8VDC while the engine is running and about 12.5VDC while the engine is off to the cigarette lighter receptacle.

That expected voltage range should be tolerated by your boom box so your yacht may have tunes.

Re: Modification of Boom Box :-)

That is great that it will work. I thought it might. I was afraid I was going to have to build a wood box with a car radio that would read memory chips and speakers in it. OF course that could be run off 12V power without a doubt.
Seems odd that no one in the world that I could find makes a music player that will plug into 12V. What about the millions of tailgating sports fans etc. Where are they getting their power from ? What about campers in the woods with RVs etc. All they have is their vehicle. The world has gone damn crazy with the bluetooth phenomenon

Just to clarify for some of the early responders on this thread...... The boombox comes with a 110V wall receptical plug in that is a transformer that outputs 13.5 volts to the boombox to recharge and play. I just wanted to get rid of the transformer because I did not need it. How dumb of the mfgr to not even offer the cig lighter plug in at least as an accessory !

WAIT, I almost missed this. Seems like if I can find a place to cut a hole and insert then I would need to purchase additional speakers. I only need two as I am an oldtimer but I read it has four channels. Will that mess it up in any way if I only use two speakers ? Still this represents a lot of work for installation but I bet the music sounds better if not quite as loud as the boombox I referenced.

But look at this... lots of complaints that it did not come with the 110V to 12V transformer... no problemo in a boat or a car.

Re: Modification of Boom Box :-)

Not sure if it's germane, but I recently saw this boom-box-guts unit that might be fun to play with. Apparently it was intended to make a golf club bag or something into a boom box...

Re: Modification of Boom Box :-)

You charge it thru the USB plug. Get a USB/cigarette lighter adapter. Many/most boats have one of those, if not easy to add.

that thing would last 5 mins on a 10ft boat. first wave or rain.

Every single gadget with a rechargable battery inside

every device with a wall wart or power brick that says DC something as output

can easily work off 12V.

Volts & mA, pin size and polarity, that's it easy peasy.

Re: Modification of Boom Box :-)

Most charge via USB cable, just pick up a dc to USB charger available at almost every gas station around. Usually for $2-3 with dual USB outputs. I agree though, unless itís waterproof that things gonna last about 10 min. You could also hook up a small solar cell and trickle charge as you go. Not sure why time is a serious issue, are you doing major multi day cruises? Or just day sails? Most rechargeable speakers last a good 8-10 hours for the cheap ones, good ones will go a full 24+ hours.

Re: Modification of Boom Box :-)

Given it is only 10 feet, you might want to consider that it could be prone to spray. So you might want something that is waterproof or at least water resistant.
