Lithium Ion Battery Announcement

For those putting in Lithium batteries please be careful and stay up with the latest research and concerns.

If you are putting multiple batteries and cells together be real sure about heat and venting the heat.

One must be careful to seperate the various chemistries as the results are quite different amongst the various Li technologies. LiFePO4 is considerably safer then any of the types mentioned in the report.

Dave, can you point to any test reports that have been published on LFP batteries? I mean scientific reports, not just a couple of guys risking their lives on utube.

Here is a Wikipedia page describing why they are safer..
Lithium iron phosphate battery - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Plus a research study done by the University of Southern California... unfortunately it doesn't have any tests, just theory.

How does the announcer hook up to cells?
Can you select the voice when it announces a low voltage warning,
like perhaps a Bernard Shaw deep voice, and a high pitched Fran Dresher
for the high voltage warnings?

I'd be more concerned with lead acid. According to this article, they produce rocket fuel!
"One byproduct of the process is gaseous hydrogen, an element so highly flammable that it is used to power rocket engines."
Tongue firmly in cheek here. I'd be careful to not lump all lithium battery chemistry's into one risk basket, and all energy storage mechanisms have some risk associated with them.

Re: Lithium Ion Battery Announcement

They may well be safer than other lithium batteries but I would like to see more than two guys and a brake press squeezing a cell(?) before I will put to much faith in the safety of the product. Theories are nice but scientific testing is better, IMO.

Re: Lithium Ion Battery Announcement

If you do some googling... The data and tests are on the internet for you to find.. Some of them are in Chinese as they are done by the manufacturer...

Just remember "scientific" tests can be done many ways... I'm not sure what everyone is looking for in tests. There are tons of youbube videos of the manufactures destructive testing their batteries.

Frankly.. I don't think there is an argument... Lifepo4 are safer than the other battery technologies... The question that remains.. Are they safe enough for a boat.. IMHO, they are as safe as Lead acid.. but thats just my opinion..

Yes, there are lots of opinions. I have them too and my opinion agrees with your opinion. What my opinion doesn't necessarily agree with is some manufacturer claiming they have done the tests and the tests "prove" that the batteries are safer than everything else "because..." I have, by the way, looked at some of the utube "tests".

Google Scholar is your friend

I offer one dissertation amongst the many that can be found. http://link.springer.com/article/10....008-009-0849-7. The Journal of Solid State Electrochemistry is the required journal to read. I have access to them via my university.

Re: Lithium Ion Battery Announcement

Thanks Dave. I don't have access to the journal and am not ready to pay that money but I will trust the abstract. Did you read the entire report?

Yes. ,it basically asserts that Lithium ferrous does not suffer the same runaway thermal characteristics as other Li formulations
