Would it be better and easier to get specific information if we started using LiFePO4 categories?

LiFePO4 Batteries
1) LiFePO4 battery abbreviations & definitions
2) Where to buy LiFePO4 batteries
3) Connecting LiFePO4 batteries, series & parallel
4) Balancing LiFePO4 batteries
5) Testing LiFePO4 batteries
6) Battery management systems (BMS) for LiFePO4 batteries
7) Using LiFePO4 as a house bank
8) LiFePO4 Battery Chargers
9) Shore charging LiFePO4 batteries
10) Alternator charging LiFePO4 batteries
11) Solar charging LiFePO4 batteries
12) LiFePO4 Low & High voltage shut off
13) Managing LiFePO4 house bank & Lead acid start battery
Nope no body wants to write it all again

Nobody has to.
Just keep the original thread on top
Then copy each post over to a specific LifePO4 category

Sort of like what we did here. Now everyone can get to specific info without going through all those posts.

Cotemar,

Great idea had we known in the beginning this thread would have grown this large. Now too much work to place those 2900 posts into sub groups. In a couple of more years most will have made the switch just due to the performance and long term cost savings of these cells, so all that effort wouldn't be needed then.

A great idea, but, if people really want to get a feel for lithium batteries and are really serious about wanting to make the change this is only a tiny bit of the over all reading required if you are going it alone. The reason for this is most of what is posted throughout the webaverse about lithium batteries is utter crap, with a few bit of genuine knowledge. If you are going it alone you need to be able to understand what is fact and what is crap. The system manufacturers are among the worst at spreading nonsense and fear, it works for those with too much money to burn and can't be bothered to do the research required, they will for ever be tied to that supplier and force to pay what they want to charge.
so that leaves those interested but don't want to go it alone, they will ask the same questions as everyone else asked, so listing out a how to guide will simply get buried in the same questions. It's human nature, most people looks for a short cut, a few take the time to learn.

If you try to do a wiki of what the safe limits are when charging and discharging, who's figures do you believe? A read through this thread will give you a charging range from 3.2v per cell to 4.2v per cell, discharges from 3.2v down to zero with the odd "the world will end if you go past or it will blow up, I’ve seen a model plane battery….. thrown in to cloud it a bit more

It just won't work, sorry, but that's just the way it is at the moment. I have just about given up on the idea of writing my book, it will just invite flame wars for the experts. I would have given up posting on forums as well but I still believe that the real information should not be drowned out by the wannabees who know all without ever actually having a lithium house battery of their own.

Sorry if this sounds rather negative, but as the swing from pioneers to early adopters to a main stream swing grows in momentum the know it all saga's wanting their name in light and their spot of glory and business B/S scare tactics trying to cash in on a technology they haven't spent the time to learn will be ramped up to fever pitch and those that really do know will just get sick of the attacks and leave, this will be one of the few records for those that really want to know what to do and what is correct, don't break it up or it will be lost for ever.

T1 Terry,

No worries. Just wanted to put the idea out there as you guys are the educators for all of us newbie’s.
This thread is just too long for a newbie to follow along and understand.

My category method has worked well in other CF location, so I was just offering it up.

All the work would be on my end and on no one else.

It’s all good, just wanted to ask.

I will just listen from now on.

Sorry, didn't mean it come across in an attacking way, more just a suggestion that it would be a lot of work that would lead to even more disputed information creating even more confusion.
Some of the nonsense I have read from manufacturers I had previously had great respect for demonstrated to me that hands on research was going to be the way to sort fact from fiction. I put the information I found forward yet I still have people claiming they know otherwise, so there isn't much hope for a wiki just yet.
At least this way, when someone comes of shouting fire and brimstone about their battery failing we can say it was their fault, they didn't read all the instructions

T1 Terry,

Got it, but this CF "LiFePO4 Batteries" thread is turning out to be the book you have not written.

You and a few other educators here are passing out "GREAT" real LiFePO4 information that cannot be had from "ANYWHERE", but here.

If you build your online book (thread) better and more organized your educated audience will be much larger and this LiFePO4 technology will prosper and grow.

I personally did not even know this LiFePO4 technology existed before you guys came along to talk about it. I really do read all the posts, but struggle at putting all the good pieces together.

It's been posted before, and needs to be updated. Perhaps made into more of a FAQ style document? See:

http://marazuladventures.files.wordp...batteries8.pdf

If someone wants to use any piece of that have at it.

Or if someone will write some "new" chunks on the details of using a Cell Log, details on the house power BMS, details on anything else desired, I will try to combine into a coherent FAQ along with modifying the document where I think it covers unnecessary stuff (like fusing between cells) and adding new stuff based on the years worth of experience I didn't have back then.

+1
People, check out Jack R at EVTV.com. It's an EV site but Jack R is a "Battery Guy". He's got many great videos that thoroughly explain LI technology. He hits the good, the bad and the ugly. If you've ever wondered about LI ions interchelating with the carbon molecules on the anode or damage to the SEI layer (that's a joke by the way), or the actual damage to these cells done by over/under charging, he explains it in an understandable way. Just look for the videos that relate to batteries in the archives.

I can't seem to find evtv.com. Are you sure that is the correct web address?
