Just stick to solar, it suits quite well by discharging at night, modify your usage to suit the input gained on any particular day.

Paralleling two LFP banks is not easy to do safely though. May be easier to stick with just a 1-2 switch without an 'all' position. Hmmm....how long will it take my 200W of PV to charge all three 8400W-hr banks? I think about 30 days with no other load.

Just a concept at this point...
I don't want to derail this thread, but imagine a 10MWh LFP bank and regenerative propulsion. Lots of places to anchor with a good current to charge up!

One of the many technological advantages that has been promised to us since perhaps the 1880's. The transatlantic tunnels were supposed to cut the travel time radically, and like regenerative propulsion, they would operate nearly for free as the trains would run down a curved tunnel to great depths, and then back up to the other end, asking gravity for most of the heavy lifting.

Still over my head...I just don't see the correlation.
I am not promising anyone anything. I am going to equip my own boat, one built by a reputable yard, with a large electric drivetrain and a sizeable non-fossil based energy storage system. When the boat is anchored in a current the drivetrain will add energy to the storage system. I know the physics involved and the methodology on how to optimize such a system as I design wind turbines for a living. Nothing about the problem that can't be well represented in simulations, and no breakthroughs in technology are required. And again...no promises, it's MY boat.

So, assuming a perfect propeller with a 1m2 sweep area, what power is available from a 1m/s current?

About 250W (of convertible power). The trick is to have a much larger swept area 'prop' without making the boat draw a lot of water.

rainmaking, yep, that is a way to get your money's worth out of the holding power of your anchor. I was thinking with the size of 105' it would be a narrow beam like the current Dashew offerings, and 15 KW of solar and 100 KW-hr of LiFePO4.

Deckofficer, that dashew fpb line is pretty awesome! Yes to the solar but multiply the LiFePO4 capacity by 100. Remember, all-electric. Heck, I'm putting 1/4 of that on my 34.

The Dashew FBP is impressive. If my pocketbook was deeper, I might buy one. But it's not...

I wish you the best of luck, because I would envy a diesel electric hybrid trawler. But what I've read indicates they won't be as efficient. Perhaps if you can get regeneration and/or enough solar you can make it work! But it's a real challenge if you want to enable 400-500 nm passages, let alone crossing the Atlantic or Pacific.

Ebaugh- you are right, it will not cross oceans. :-(
It will cruise the Caribbean indefinitely without fuel though. You are also right about diesel-electric. It really doesn't pay to have it on a cruising boat.
