Just bought a 24V furler for a 12V boat ....

Managed to purchase a 24V FACNOR / BAMAR RMEJ1.02 furler and considering the electrical installation.

Presently we have for the bow thruster a 12v battery at the bow, close to the thruster.
As I don’t want to add a separate 24V battery to the bow, alternative installation possibilities are welcome.

Whether you will find one that will do the job will depend on the maximum amps that furler can draw. Remember to put fuses in the installation ... .


Or you check what a "spare 12 V" motor for that furler costs - there should be one on offer.

Two 12v batteries and a serial/parallel switch with a relay to your furler only.

This will allow you to charge the 12v batteries at 12v, output 12volts to your windlass and output 24v to your furler.

You can pay $1000 (last time I looked) for a Vetus switch. Or pick one up for less than $100 at a farm equipment place like I did. Probably cost about $10 for an automotive relay at any auto parts store.

Find yourself a good ABYC Certified Electrician or farm equipment mechanic to put this together for you.

It will run on 12v at 1/2 the speed...

DC motors change speed with voltage ...
AC motors change speed with frequency ...

Will meet an electrician next week, interested to hear of his suggestion.

Installation of Unit will take some time as other projects. Hope to post details of the progress.

You only need to add ONE more 12 volt battery to the one you already have in the bow. You just wire them in series for the furler--but take off the bow thruster exactly as you had it before--in the middle of the series.

That is your cheapest and best option--but it is not the only option.

Who will tell you the same thing. You will need to charge both linked batteries at the same time from a 24 volts charger, and to do this you need a 12 to 24 volts converter. You may be able to source one second hand. This sort of thing--about the same cost as a large marine battery.

The other alternative--is to buy a 12 volts motor for the furler and use the same battery as the bow thruster--lets face it--the furler is not used very often.
