Inverters - Pure vs. Modified Sine Wave

I'd like to run a netbook or a full blown laptop off of an inverter. Will the typical laptop power supply tolerate a modified sine wave or do I need to pop the extra dough for the "pure" sine wave inverters?

I have used several different laptops (IBM, Dell, Compaq) with inexpensive modified-sine-wave inverters and had no problems at all.

For about $35, I recently purchased a 12v charging cable that plugs into my Netbook and the 12v cigarette outlet at the nav desk. It appears to work. Obviously, if you're attempting to power an AC device such as a desktop computer or hair dryer, you will require an inverter.
