Inverter Chargers

New to me boat with 8 batteries, inverter charger and solar panel. At the dock is it proper to leave everything on or should something be isolated so as not to shorten battery life etc? Should batteries be allowed to run down a bit and recharged or should they be isolated and just use shore power. Or just use solar to float the batteries and isolate the charger part of the inverter or, or.........
