Re: Inverter/Charger Recommends

Y'all are debating a straw man I made no such claim about separates.

Read more carefully.

I was arguing the "can't do both concurrently" idea.

I agree Combi's are great for many.

I really don't know what you are referring too.
What "claims" did you NOT make?

I too was discussing with you, the "can't do both concurrently" topic.

If you were referring to my last post which was to Ranger42C, that was another, separate discussion.

I think the wandering started with these two posts, #31 and #32...

FWIW, I'm not arguing, just trying to understand...

Re: Inverter/Charger Recommends

Exactly, I never said they don't work, as a general statement.

They just don't fit that specific use case. As I clarified in #38.

All the other reasons I prefer to go with separates, are indeed a separate discussion topics.

Nor that.

I don't think power assist is an important requirement for many.

>> Anything two separate different brand units not communicating with each other can do, any Combi unit should be able to do and more.

I think you read this as meaning the opposite of what I intended.

And this

>> can an inverter/charger with its own internal automatic transfer switch ever be a load and a charge source simultaneously?

I may have caused that. Trying to understand why John said a combi unit isn't suitable for a separate buss installation (I think that's what he meant?)...

I asked if an inverter/charger can do AC and DC at the same time... thinking that if the answer is it can't... what do busses have to do with anything?

I stand behind my statement.
If you know of some "marine" combo unit (and I stress MARINE) that
will both charge and invert, at the same time, then please provide a link.

Re: Inverter/Charger Recommends

Now full disclosure, I can and have worked on systems where separate chargers and inverters work simultaneously, But these were not on a small recreational boat.

All of the ship board AC power always came from the inverter/s. Which were always running off the battery bank/s. Which were always being charged from gen-sets or shore power.

Think of a big UPS.

But as I said, not typical for a rec. vessel.

I think it is an all important feature. It allows sizing a generator at about 60-75% of what would otherwise be needed. That means lower fuel usage and it allows the diesel power plant to work at near optimum loading. I think there will be less problems with generators that are sized for the average load rather than the peak demand. Power assist is the only thing they makes that possible.

Then I don't even understand your point.

I thought you mean a combi unit can't be simultaneously charging the bank (charge source, AC input / DC output)

and servicing other (AC) loads at the same time (from DC or upstream AC input)

Maybe if you specify more clearly what you mean?

Keep in mind my preference is to use AC power, in or out, as little as possible.
