Pre heating glow plug saps power out so not enough grunt to pull the fuel solenoid in yet there is still plenty of grunt for cranking.

So, back to the title of the post "How to truly determine start battery condition?"
Hi Simi

i just saw in your post after reading it again, and you say its cranking but not pulling in the fuel solenoid?

The Solenoid pulls maybe 1 Amp and the starters possibly over 100Amp
so if its Cranking and not starting its somewhere between unlikely and impossible for it to be the batteries!

As the solenoid is known to work i suggest you look at
1) Measure the Voltage at the solenoid while its failing to open
2) The wire size to the solenoid - if its at all light / thin replace it especially if the result of step 1 is less than expected.
3) Can you change it so the Solenoid opens with the Glow plugs? as the opening load will be higher than the holding load.
