You are asking for a mess. If you are cruising, you want to be free of marinas, at least some of the time, and you can't stay in temperate waters all the time. An add-on generator is likely to be gasoline, not diesel, so you'll have to mount it outboard for safety's sake. Same with fuel storage. The electrical demands keep going up. Are you willing to "camp," as opposed to living in comfort? I've seen cruisers with a 2KW genset and a line of gas cans lashed to the railings, but starting there? I don't think I'd buy a boat that did not have the equipment I needed, in the hope that I could patch something together.

Have you asked the folks on the Dufour Owners Forum in the UK? There might be some 42's out there who have tackled this problem.
