Re: Honda EU20i and Battery Charger
We have a 40 amp charger that can be run at the same time as the 1 hp watermaker without breaking a sweat. I would imagine it could run just about any charger you could fit.

Re: Honda EU20i and Battery Charger
If you have a 100 amp charger the EU2000i will put out 90 amps. I have a Zantrex charger/inverter 2000watts, 100 amps.

Re: Honda EU20i and Battery Charger
The Honda 2000 is rated at a Max of 2000 watts for a resistive load, and a running load of 1600 W (as I recall). Most battery chargers are inductive loads, so the "load factor" is on the order of 0.7, yielding a Max load of 1400 watts and a running load of about 1000 watts, suggesting you can likely run a Max 90 - 100 A charger and maybe as low as 70A (14v charging voltage). Anything less than 70A should be fine no matter what.
A few chargers might be "compensated" meaning they have some added capacitance to compensate for the inductive load, bringing the load factor closer to 1. These might allow you to use a higher current charger.
Alternately, you can wire a motor-start capacitor across the Honda's power leads yourself. Such devices are often sold as "soft-start" devices for AC motors and pumps.

Re: Honda EU20i and Battery Charger
Have a Victron Multi 12V/120A charger which runs fine off EU20 generator. At 90A bulk charge setting the Victron is consuming about 1400VA, so there is a bit of head room for the Honda to charge a bit faster if you really wanted to go to a little above 100A.
Depends if you want to run any other decent loads while charging I guess...

Re: Honda EU20i and Battery Charger
You could run two 60amp Sterling Pro Charge Ultra’s. They are a very efficient Charger, I think you could run both, but that can also be turned down if both together are just a bit much, and or you want to run other things, plus with two, you have a back up. Only 60 amps, but you only lose half charging ability if one packs it in as opposed to all of it.

Re: Honda EU20i and Battery Charger
gernally a 100a charger is in the 16a range. with the honda maxing around 13a. so I'd say 80 would be around max. but others above seem to think you can run a 100a.
most chargers can't be turned down. so something to watch out for.

Re: Honda EU20i and Battery Charger
Practical experience with a Prosine 2.0 was 85-90A sustained. Approx 13A input.

Re: Honda EU20i and Battery Charger
I have a Xantrex 2000 watt inverter / charger with a remote that allows the input to be set to suit the source. With my 2000 watt generator I set the input limit to 15 amps.

It's called Power Share:
Power Share Feature for Link 2000 Controlling Honda Generators
Very helpful hint to control generators and 20A shorepower
Power Share feature on Link 2000
For the OP: add up the loads and compare them to the output of the generator.

Re: Honda EU20i and Battery Charger
Why don't you consider solar and/or wind. Lighter, quieter, passive (always working without intervention).
I have 390 watts of solar on my 44ft sailboat and it covers most of my needs. When I am on long passages I also use a drag prop generator and an AirX generator with Air+ blades. No generator noise, no fuel carry issues, no heat.

I have solar, smart reg on alternator, this is about getting max output from generator to minimise run time when its needed.

Do you have electrical loads that your current configuration does not meet? How large is your battery bank that you need a 100 amp hour charger? Your batteries can only absorb power at a rate based on it's size. That rate drops off quickly as the charge percentage increases.

Re: Honda EU20i and Battery Charger
Get a good adjustable unit like Sterling or ProMariner, big as possible, that dials down the current to account for upstream limitations.
