High Output Alternators - Look Out Balmar !

I've recently discovered an alternator package that seems to be a real threat to Balmar! Check out www.electromaax.com they offer up to 180amp alternators with smart external reg +.... and this is the deal sealer for me, a Serpentine belt & pulley kit that does away with having to configure 2 belts & pulley arrangement!!

I've just bought a 180amp package @ Boat Show discount and really looking forward to testing it out.

Definately not as slick as your new unit, but I took mine to an old fashioned electrical shop, and had the bump the juice.......i2f

Perhaps a lower cost alternative:

Amptech Small Case Alternators high output 12 and 24 VDC Great Water, Inc. Maine

Re: High Output Alternators - Look Out Balmar !

Electromaax has allot more serpentine pulley kits than they have listed on their website. I just purchased a kit to fit my Volvo MD22, which is not listed on their website. So contact them directly or (Cruise RO Water and Power) for information if they have a pulley kit for your engine. I made the mistake of assuming mine (MD22) wasn't covered and was really surprised that they have them and just have not updated their website! I think they have a goldmine given the new battery technologies (Odyssey & LifePO4's) seems as if demand will only increase.

Re: High Output Alternators - Look Out Balmar !

Electromaax is a great company and John, one of the owners, is very attentive to the needs of boaters being a sailor himself. Their alts and kits are very nice and they wind all their own stators and rotors in-house. Some builders are now using them as an OEM alternator due to the very, very high reliability they offer.

Oh and they even have a kit for our not so popular Westerbeke 44B Four...

Re: High Output Alternators - Look Out Balmar !

I used to get my large alternators at truck supply houses, 175A for around $400.
Then I got wind and solar so my battery bank never gets low enough to warrant the big alternators anymore.

Still looks like a fair deal though...

Re: High Output Alternators - Look Out Balmar !

Electromaax use serpentine drive belts ( 10 groove), due to a mixup of the supplied belts in the kit for my Yanmar 4JH3 motor I'm trying to source a Jason 470J belt( or similar) locally in Marina Del Rey or near to get me away to San Diego, then have Electromaax forward new belts to there. I've been told performance auto parts stores stock them. Where in this area?

I would google 'power transmission' suppliers for Los Angeles, or Long Beach - there are probably dozens of companies that can help you. You need to ask for a 470J10 belt, it doesn't really matter if its the Jason brand or not. All this can be done over the phone, there shouldnt be a need to chase around too much..

good luck!

Re: High Output Alternators - Look Out Balmar !

I'm wondering if those who bought the Electromaax alternators have any feedback. There are three people over on the SSCA bulletin board who find they only a maximum of 50-55% of the advertised output. They also are frustrated with very poor documentation and customer support.

SSCA Discussion Board • View topic - any experience with electromaax alternators?
