Group 24 and 27 Difference

According to the Yanmar manual a group 24 battery is sufficient for my 3GM30.

I wanted a 27 but there isn't one in stock at moment at West Marine.
The group 24 is 1,000 amps and the 27 is 1,050.
The 27 is much bigger in size.

Is there more of a difference between the two batteries other than 50 amps and dimensions?

Thanks

They are for all intents the same. The group 27 has a little more CCA, but its just a little more. So either size will work for the 3gm.

Re: Group 24 and 27 difference question.

Hate to say it, because I like West Marine for many things, but go to any autoparts place or even WalMart and get the best starting battery you can for about half the price of West. I hear that Sams Club now sells excellent Deka/Penn batteries if you have one around. There is nothing to be gained by buying a West Marine battery, and yes the 24 should be fine.

Re: Group 24 and 27 difference question.

Technically, the BCI group numbers only pertain to the physical size category of of the battery -- not the capacity. That said, the capacity of a typical Group 24 or 27 should be fine for your engine, but a few extra amps might come in handy sometime.

Maybe more importantly -- what size battery box/compartment do you have in place? Will it accommodate a group 27?

Re: Group 24 and 27 difference question.

I priced batteries at West Marine among other places. West prices were nearly double what I paid at another marine store.

The PO had installed a group 24 battery for my 3gm30f and it worked fine for several years. I wanted more capacity so went with a group 27 when I replaced it.

It is for a 24 but I could change the box to a 27 quite easily if necessary.

Thanks everyone for the great help.
