Re: Getting Started with Solar

I recently completed a 3 phase solar project.
Phase 1 - 2 50w BP Solar panels connected to a Blue Sky 2512ix. Fixed mounting over my dodger.
Phase 2 - 2 65w BP Solar panels added to the PV array. Removable and mounted to lifeline rails.
Phase 3 - 1 140w BP Solar panel added to the PV array. Fixed mounting over the bimini.

Lessons Learned:
1. Adding 140w panel started overloading 2512iX. Upgraded to the Bluesky 3024iL and been much happier.
2. Use 8 or 10 guage wire to minimize voltage drop.
3. All panels shoud be compatible with regards to voltage and technology (stay with Kyrocera, or BP, or Sharp, or whatever.
4. Buy good panels from an established manufacturer.
5. Spend money for good mountings. Don't go cheap. When it gets windy, these panels, especially larger ones, become sails and will break free if allowed. These larger panels also get pretty heavy so plan accordingly.
