generator runs great! no power...

as the title says, i am getting no current from my generator.
the only thing i have not done is jumped in the laz with my multimeter while it is running.
i did not see a reset switch on the gen itself.
curious if i do not know something about marine generators? all connections look secure.
it did work when i got it. thou it seemed to only put out 18 amps...
my brain says it needs rebuilt. but i am wondering if there is a mystery switch someplace.
its a farymann diesel 3K model 15

Re: generator runs great! no power...

if it is broken, i am considering taking off the AC generator and installing a DC generator, an AC pump for cooling, a refrigeration pump, and putting an inverter in to suply the AC current for everything else. thats a better setup anyhow.

Re: generator runs great! no power...

most gens have a breaker on them.

looks for volts, not amps.

Re: generator runs great! no power...

If no volts, look for reset switch also check voltage upstream of CB. Could be a problem with AVR, look inside it if its got a electrolytic capacitor in it, check that. Other than that too complicated for non technician.
Your other idea bit premature, but sounds like a interesting project, have you done something like that before? Are you going to use clutches, multiply clutches, same shaft, - refrigeration pump do you mean cooling water pump or the compressor.

I can't figure how ya think the stuff your going to do if the gennys messed up is better then fixing the genny! Heck it would cost twice as much as haveing to rebild the entire genny !! and you will still have more to go wrong !! just sayin, go with what ya got! it worked so something simple must be wrong !!

Hi

I have a next gen 3.5 deisel gen. Had the same problem, turned out to be a dead capacitor, on the genny.

Look for a BIG capacitor, around 3" long, get modl no and replace! Mine was mounted on the genny.

Good luck

Charlie.

i think we have the same unit, it does 50 or 60hz and 3000 or 3500 watts.
before it failed it seems to be less then 115 volts, did yours do that too?
also where is it? inside the back case or in front of it?

Do you have a voltage sensing transfer switch? The engine may be running but at not enough rpm. Had a gas genset that would not put out until it hit the right voltage. This is used to save equipment down line from running on low voltage.

with a DC gen you can slow down the engine, and lower noise.
with additional pulleys you can add anything you want. RO pump, compressor,

i would add a automotive AC pump for cooling the main cabin. run the condensing side into a used marine coil, and drive a water pump off the engine as well.

its a manual switch: shore power , off , off , Onan power
(its not an onan, just an onan switch )

Hi

As you look at the genny, from the side with oil top up at the bottom. Look to the right, mine has a black plastic gaurd. Take that off and there is a huge capacitor.
