External regulator HELP!!

Hi,

We are stuck in La Cruz with a failed balmar MC624 regulator. The only regulator I could get there is for a bus (since our alt is 24V). It has only 3 terminals, POS, NEG, and EXC. Can anyone help with how to connect?? Trying to leave in the morning.

EXC is exciter, the blue field wire.

Okay, do I connect the POS directly to to BAT on the alt or to the ignition so it only get 24v when the engine start?. I am asking how I energize the alt. I guess the NEG direct to the engine block?

You want the regulator to be keyed on. And yes, neg is the engine block.

POS should be connected to the positive side of the battery and should be turned on/off by the ignition system. The regulator will use this for battery voltage sensing, so if you can figure out a way to get it controlled by but not powering the entire ignition circuit that will give you better regulation.

NEG to wherever your negative battery connection is made.

EXC goes to the field connection on the alternator.

[EDIT] the reason to turn the POS on/off with the ignition is because whenever the POS has voltage the field current will flow. If your alternator is not spinning it will just run down your batteries. You can also do this by hand with a little toggle switch if getting into the ignition circuit is a pain, but you have to remember to turn it off when you shut down the engine. [/EDIT]

Do I need to do something with the "Stator" wire, next to the "Field" wire?

I assume that is the "stator" wire on the alternator. It is to drive the tachometer. Not required to be connected.

Why would anyone leave La Cruz?
