Electric fence for boat

Obviously Dave hasn't been around the electric fences I've been around! You can drive a panic'd cow thru a board fence, wire fence or electric fence I suppose.... but that doesnt mean they dont mind it... and it certainly is not pleasant for humans!

I don't think it will end untill time ends. People do not respect themselves let alone what belongs to someone else. Js imo. Electric fence was an idea I had but it got shot down too. Lol

spent my young life on cattle farms, I could drive a herd of cattle through a steel gate never mind an electric fence. ( did manage to drive some through the side of the owners car, thats was a bit of an opps!).

Would that not have a detrimental effect on one's own and nearby boats' zincs?

bTW the question about ground is actually very valid

On most electric fence systems, the output is not ground referenced , you actually drive a ground wire into the ground to do that, so in a boats case you'd have to hang such wire into the water, Now of course you have on board impressed corrosion generator. Nice.

A shoe is not an insulator. In electrical terms it is best described as a resistor. Two shoes can be electrically considered as two resistors in parallel (assuming both feet are on the ground).
Shoes are normally damp(ish) from foot perspiration which also lowers their resistance.

A potential difference (EMF, volts) exists between the live wire and ground and your body (including your shoes and socks) completes the circuit and hey presto, current flows.

Yes, you always need two points for a potential difference to exist. Making the ground one of them is sensible for an electric fence used for stock control as that is what the stock on

As for a boat, the choices are partly dictated by the degree of engineering one is willing to go to. Some ideas could be:
Top and bottom lifeline i.e. both insulated from each other.
Top lifeline and a metal toe rail.
Lifelines and stanchions; this would require touching both at the same time for the shock to be delivered.

I am only looking at the electrical aspects, I have no interest in the deterrent aspects.

I have seen electric fence setups that do not depend on a traditional ground but instead rig two lines instead of one. The second line acts as the "ground". The "intruder" would have to touch both to be zapped.
