Diesel Generator 3000 rpm - can it idle before ramping up

My 3 cyl perkins 100 generator runs only at 3000 rpm. Is there a way of starting it at idle and then switch to 3000 rpm. 3000 rpm start is not good for any engine and would enable me to check raw water cooling etc before ramping up. At the moment I get about 10 seconds to ensure that the raw water is flowing before the impellor is damaged.
thanks John

that would depend if your genset has a solenoid for throttle up, bet it doesn't. could though, if so, a switch in that circuit would solve that. just check your strainer for trash and flow before you crank...

Sure it's not 1500RPM? Either way, basicly No, not in any easy way. Don't worry about the engine going into full revs at cold start up. They are designed to handle it and they handle it well. I understand your concern about the cooling water, but if you ensure you have the seacock on, then it is unlikely you will have any problem. If no water comes out, chances are the impellor was at fault and needs replacing anyway.
