Cranking battery size for Perkins 4.236

Hi all,

My boat has always had a single battery bank, both for house and starting. I want to change that and have a dedicated starter battery, but can't find a document from Perkins that specifies the proper CCA I need from the battery.

I've measured 400 amps when cranking. Is it safe to assume that 600 CCA battery will be enough?

Again, it's a Perkins 4.236, 85 HP.

Thanks!

I use a west marine AGM-55 to start my 4.236.
  • CCA: 775
  • MCA: 955

WEST MARINE High Cranking Power AGM Battery | West Marine

Never any problem turning it over.

Do you plan on having AGM for the house battery too? Are you mixing AGM for Starting with a Deep Cycle for House? I'm trying to understand batteries and their use. Thanks

Get the largest battery that will fit in the battery box. Starter motors live longer when not starved for power.

Ok, thanks, good to know. I have a massive amount of room, so that's not an issue.
