I do the Milwaukee drill thing myself, maybe not exactly what you wanted, but it works surprisingly well

So do we, pilot, and as you say, it works surprisingly well. It is not elegant, but supremely serviceable, just keep the batteries far away from the AP compass.

Re: Convert Present Winch To Electrical Winch
If it is a self tailing winch you can probably sell it for about 90% the price of a new ST winch, then use that money to offset the cost. But I am pretty sure the older lewmar's aren't upgradable (the new ones are).

Winchrite is a good product and a great company to do business with. Google Sailology. I've been using mine for 4 years.

Re: Convert Present Winch To Electrical Winch
Check with Lewmar to see if it is upgaradable - I recently ordered the upgrade kit from Defender , about $1,500, with the boat show discount. As for the WinchRite - my boat came with a non-functioning unit - I sent it to sailology with the required $150.00. It worked for approximately 1 1/2 seasons and quit - I contacted them and they wanted another $150. I figured that in the long run, it would be cost effectice to upgrade the winch.

The Winchrite is how we went after combing the show for a conversion. Our boat had the power winch as an option 25 years ago so putting it in would be fairly easy but there were no originals to be found. Winchrite discontinued the last model and introduced a "new and improved" version for nearly twice the price. Defender had some left at clearance prices after the show.

Re: Convert Present Winch To Electrical Winch
We just completed 2 seasons sailing the Med and using the Milwaukee 1/2 " drill+winchbit for all our reefing and some of our trimming....its a little heavy and awkward, but it woks great. And, when you need a strong or big drill, it dies double duty. We think it was money very well spent, and a lot cheaper/easier than converting to electric winches. A really good solution!
