Charging Ipad... .how?
am a newbie to Yachting electronics,
have sailed mostly without instruments or an alternator.
Am looking at buying a 35' yacht, with a diesel motor, solar panels and thus the capacity to generate power.
Am also looking forward to having (back-up) access to the data and program's on my Ipad.
my question. Having been many days from shore-power, to re- charge the Ipad, Do people simple plug the Ipad into an Invertor that is connected to a charged ( house ) Battery ?
Seems like a dumb question, I have used the "search thread tool"
if the answer is simply " yes " , I'm Okay with that.

Just get a 12V charger cable for the ipad.

Plug USB outlet into "cigarette lighter" outlet.

Re: Charging Ipad... .how?
plugging your ipad into your inverter essentially converting dc to ac then back to dc will work but is inefficient. much better off just plugging into cigarette lighter with usb adapter.

Re: Charging Ipad... .how?
My Iphone will charge directly from a 12-volt outlet. My Ipad won't. If the boat doesn't have a larger inverter, I use a small plug in inverter and charge it primarily when the engine is running. I also prefer one's that allow 2 or more devices to be charged at once.

Re: Charging Ipad... .how?
Your Ipad will charge off of 12V, but you must have the higher power USB port to do it. Many available from fleabay for about $10 or less.

I have found that you need at least a 2.1A 12V plug to be able to charge an iPad.

Re: Charging Ipad... .how?
Can't believe this thread went so long without mentioning this:
Dual USB Charger Socket - Blue Sea Systems
$20 or so. I bought a couple, but haven't installed them yet. Says it outputs a total of 2.1 amps at 5 volts. No idea if it ouputs 2.1 amps to one port for maximum ipad charging.

I had a plug on my boat, that my fridge ran off of, and I'm fairly sure that drew more than 4 amps, but my Ipad wouldn't charge off it. Same in my car.
I'm not an electrical expert. How would an unfused plug on a 15-amp circuit limit the available amperage to under 2.1 amps?
