Because the DC convertor inside of the charging receptacle that converts to 5 VDC has a less than 2 amp limit. Go get a usb receptacle that says 2.1 amp on it and it will charge, you can get one almost anywhere, Walmart or even convince stores

You have a USB fridge??

As mentioned, you need a "good" (2.1a) USB converter, which sell for about $10 at your local 7-11. The not-so-good ones will also work, slowly, if you turn the device off to charge.

Yes, I have used it for a season now just plugged in to a 12V outlet and am happy with it. So plan to wire it in. In fact, I plan to get a second one to install at the nav station. The housing is designed to accomodate fixed mounting.

I have found that with the ubiquity of USB charged devices now that we don't use the automotive style 12V sockets much, but need more USB ports (esp when we have guests aboard). So, I've ordered a couple of compact automotive to USB adaptors with dual USB ports.

And, as per spec, it does have one high output USB port. Have not tested specifically w an iPad, but it charges my Samsung tablet just fine, and spec says will charge an iPad. The underlying 12V circuit must of course be wired and fused to support the potential load of this adaptor. Mine was already so no problem.

Everyone hates the cigarette plug. A very "dumb" connection basically, but we are stuck with it.

I just found a combo unit like the above - cigarette and 2 USB also around $20.

I charge my phones and iPad all over the place. Predominantly USB but also have tons of wall chargers and cigarette chargers.

It's our modern reality to "need to plug in" - USB is becoming the "go-to" connection.

I also have a small (800w?) 110v inverter - rarely used.

We have four of the blue sea plugs... They work great. They will charge the iPads overnight or much faster during the day when the line voltage is pushed up by the solar and wind.

We put two plugs in the cockpit and two inside near our stereo cabinet.
