Charging Egc2 6volt

Installed new house bank,4 Egc2 ,2 groups in series and all 4 in parallel U know the drill 12volts and 460 amp hours.
My question is can I use the 55 amp alt to charge or better off with my genset and batt charger?
If using alt while on the hook what are the parameters for doing so?
Richard

If you are looking to use the engine to charge the batts while at anchor then no its not the best idea. Diesel engines in general should be run at 80-85% load most of the time. Extended runs at idle cause cylinder glazing and problems down the road. Only use the engine to charge the batteries if you happen to be using the engine to go somewhere.

gen and charger. but make sure you have a decent size charger. around 80a. otherwise you'll be running the gen forever. also get a battery monitor, so you know when to stop running the gen.

As you can probably only get about 35-40 usable amps out of a 55 amp alternator, it will take many hours to charge with the alternator at anchor--say 3-4 hours a day to replace the typical 100-150 amp-hours daily consumption. You will need to get the engine revs up to 12-1500 to get the alternator output up. I wouldn't worry too much about glazing the cylinders--the motor will outlive you if you occasionally run it up under load.

If you already have a genset and a 100 amp charger, it would be preferable to running the main engine at anchor, but you can also charge with the main engine while motoring.

Re: Charging Egc2 6volt

The boat has and old sea ranger 15 amp charger in it. My question is on the gauge with nothing else drawing off the batteries when I start up genset its drawing about 18 amps and after 2 1/2 hrs its come down to 9amps. I'm assuming when the charger gauge reads 0 the batteries will be fully charged? Am I missing something?
Looking for a 100 or 80 amp charger ASAP any reccomendations?
Richard

Re: Charging Egc2 6volt

With 460AH you need at least a 50amp charger. Otherwise you will sulfate the batteries. 15 amps will not even be able to hit peak bulk charging rate.
Not even the engine mounted alternator will be big enough to charge your new bank correctly.

Also running diesels under heavy load all the time is just not true. In some places in the world they idle all day, or they would not start again.
