I wonder if I'll be reprimanded for asking too many questions around here

One thing I really don't like about simple chargers for hand-held equipment is that if you forget to unplug them they can cook your batteries. Over the years I've ruined one rechargeable spotlight and one radio battery that way.

What I'd like to have is a timer that you can set for up to 12 hours that will disconnect the power it controls (12 V and/or 110 V) when the time is up. Plug the timer into a powered socket (whatever voltage it is designed for) and just have a mechanical settable windup timer that disconnects the output when the time is up.

Anything like that already on the market ?

Thought about looking for a timer as you describe, but never got around to it. I'll be looking to see what others have found.

Sven,

Both AC and DC timers are readily available. Just Google "120 volt timer" and "12 volt timer".

They start at about $24.

So far no luck. There are plenty of programmable timers but I still haven't found any that you just plug into, wind up to the number of on hours you want the power to stay on and then just let do its thing.

Sven- look for timers designed for photography equipment. The timers used for old-style photo enlargers are cheap, plentiful and do exactly what you describe: set to X total time, press start, wait until it shuts off.

edit- the spring wound Intermatic that Gord mentioned above is designed for 120/240 V but I'm pretty sure it works for any lower voltage, ie. 12 V, without any modifications.
