Yes, I meant to put them in the battery compartment - that doesn't take much more wiring. Here is a pic of ours. Each pair of 6V goes to a switch, and the switches are ganged in series with the main battery cable coming off the last switch to the fuse. Any of the three pairs can be isolated from the others by turning its switch to off.
