Best LED Bulbs for the Buck

I hope to replace the halogen bulbs in my overhead fixtures with LEDs. I've determined that the present bulb is an Ancor 529361 (G4 BI-PIN Base, 12V, 5W, 0.42A, 5CP)

I've seen Marinebeam bulbs for $15. I've also seen eBay bulbs for $1.49 such as:
eBay - New & used electronics, cars, apparel, collectibles, sporting goods & more at low prices

Has anyone real world experience with the cheap Chinese ones? There's such a big price difference I'd like to find out why they wouldn't work before I invest 10X more.
Pete

Thanks. Do you recommend a particular LED manufacturer? Can you provide links to the actual bulbs you have used and like?

Re: Best LED bulbs for the buck

Hi Pete
the cheap bulbs I tried were provided only enough light for mood lighting. I then installed sensibulbs, which why not cheap were very usable ,allowing to me to convert all my lights to led Still not a bright as regular bulbs The power savings was great allowing me to leave the lights on as long as I liked Do a search on this forum, it has been covered before

Re: Best LED bulbs for the buck

We replaced the same bulb in all of our fixtures with these: Array Lighting - Premium LED lamp bulbs utilizing Selective Heat Sink Technology

We are extremely happy with them. You can get them at Home Depot and Lowes for under $10.

Thanks. It's doubtful whether they would fit being 1.2" long, but one could buy one at Home Depot to test fit and return if necessary

You didn't post a picture of the fixture. Is it one of those small ones where the bulb is put in vertically? If so, these are not appropriate bulbs for that.

I was thinking your fixtures were like ours - 3" round ones with the bulb put in horizontally.

We have the senibulbs onboard and are really happy with them. With five of them going and the fridge we stay under 5 amps.

Thanks. The outside diameter of silver-colored ring is 2-5/8". The conical reflector has a diameter of about 1-1/2". Here are some pictures with and without the lens attached. The bulb is in a horizontal position. The fixtures in heads and staterooms are similar in design, but a bit smaller.

All our LED's are G4 connectors in small puck fixtures. You can get them to fit most anywhere.

Re: Best LED bulbs for the buck

The cheap ones often say 'warm white" but the actual light quality is very blue. You are looking for a colour temp. of 3000 to 3500 which will be slightly colder than an incandescent, but still OK. The better LEDs will tell you the actual temp. Avoid any where they don't tell you the temp number.

I'm using the LEDs from LED wholesalers, this one, in warm white :

www.LEDwholesalers.com - Brightest Tower Type G4 18 SMD LED 5050 12V Ac/dc

I replaced 10W halogens with them - they are slightly brighter than those and the light quality is excellent.

Re: Best LED bulbs for the buck

very long discussion of this on this site here & good links:

Mixed Feelings about LED Cabin Lighting

My posts start at #46. There is a BIG difference between bulbs and you will likely be disappointed if you shop by price alone. You also will not save what you anticipated regarding power consumption. Please follow the links regarding Current Limiting at BIBI and Marine Beam. I have lights from both of these guys and IMTRA in the cabin and Signal Mate new fixtures at the deck level. (four diferent commercial suppliers). We are all LED including NAV. I couldn't find a compass replacement so I had to make one using Radio Shack stuff. Lots to learn on this with no black & white answers.

Thanks. This looks like the closest thing at LEDwholesalers.com
www.LEDwholesalers.com - 6 Surface Mount White LEDs G4 Light Module 12V AC/DC

Your LED-lighting.doc gives an 8-30 VDC input voltage range and only a 1 watt power consumption? The above bulb shows 1.5 watts and just 12 VDC?
