Bay15d LED issue

Hey guys,

Need some help here. I’ve replaced all my bulbs with LED’s and not one of them work! 12v, bay15d socket, and they’re all proper LEDs, not knock-off el cheapos. I’ve checked all terminals / sockets and there’s 12.6-13V getting in ok.

Anyone else have this issue?

Try reversing the polarity of the connections.

Try reversing the polarity.
I ran into the same problem, instead of wiring everything backwards I bought LEDs from Marine Beam, which work with correct polarity.

Oh I forgot to mention, the bay15d are an offset bulb, so they only go in one way. Or do you mean chop the pos/neg wires and rewire them in reverse?

Re: Bay15d LED issue

Before you chop anything, try taking a bulb out and touching 12 v across the bottom terminals both polarity ways, to see if you get any light.

Yes reverse the wiring on one as a test

Re: Bay15d LED issue

I was used to automotive types 1156 and 1157 before getting the trailer boat. Those use a grounded shell and one or two positive contacts for the filaments.

The boat uses single filament bulbs with a double contact base, non-grounded shell for the nav lights.

Good explanation here: https://www.bulbamerica.com/pages/wh...ay15d-base1157

The dual contact LED bulbs I got from Superbriteleds.com do not seem noisy for the radio frequencies or picky as to which contact is which.

Yes, test the bulb outside the socket first, then in one socket, and go from there. Or take the bulb out and spin it around 180 degrees and replace to see it if is polarity-sensitive.

A BAY15D socket will not provide ground to a BA15D bulb & vice versa.

The interior lights in my boat were all aftermarket non-marine stuff that uses 1141/1156 type bulbs -so nothing confusing about that, right?

Re: Bay15d LED issue

Thanks guys. Turns out it was a polarity issue so I’ve ordered a set of polarity agnostic bulbs. Appreciate all your advice!

Re: Bay15d LED issue

I'm facing the same problem and feeling baffled .

Aqua Signal 40's installed, I tried to replace the old bulbs with BAY15D leds and didn't get any of them working .

Tried to install the bulb in both polarities, no help. Installed in the 'natural' position and cross connected the wires, no help. The old bulb works fine and there is 12.8 vdc in the connection surfaces. Really don't understand what's going on.

Re: Bay15d LED issue

Ahoy and welcome to CF Mijuuti!

The designations can be confusing, each letter means something, and close enough does not usually work.

My boat takes ba-15-d 'marine' lights in the navigation light fixtures but the cabin lights are ba-15-s

bay-15-d are the 2 filament bulbs used in tail lights of old cars and trailers with 4 wire connections.

I have ba-15-d LED's from SuperbriteLEDs that are not sensitive to polarity and seem to be quiet as far as VHF interference goes.

I could not determine from the AS-40 series literature which bulbs are used.

Re: Bay15d LED issue

Hey Spot

Thanks forums your reply. This is the exact bulb fitted at the moment and works well: https://danlamp.com/sm-lanternepaere...cd-25w-bay15d/

So it's a normal bay15d. There's really something peculiar with led versions with same base, the wiring inside the bulb must be different from indecadent bulb.

Re: Bay15d LED issue

I have had similar issues. In my case, the culprit is usually corrosion in the fixtures contacts, once in a while in the wiring. Clean all the contacts well and try again. LEDs use very little current and any corrosion can be an issue.

Re: Bay15d LED issue

Marinebeam has LEDs that fit the Aqua Signal Series 40 fixtures. Their Bay15Ds are indexed, only fit in one way in the AQ Series 41 housings we have.

Re: Bay15d LED issue

The proper high end LED replacement bulbs, Marine Beam, Imtra, have a built in pulse width modulation current control (PWM). This controls the forward current through a wide range of input voltage. They also have a rectifier input circuit so that they do not care about polarity. The other various knock off wanna-be replacements may lack one or both features. Automotive LEDs have neither and probably are not as efficient or long lived considering the voltage variations on a sail boat. The easiest way to know straight off is if the LED replacement is polarity insensitive AND it will accept a wide range of input volts, typically 9 to 32 volts. The PWM switching circuit must operate at a high enough frequency to not interfere with your radios. The makers noted above meet this criteria. I know that Marine Beam has specific listing replacements for specific fixtures. Their people have always been helpful when I had issues.

Re: Bay15d LED issue

Found the resson. My leds have two positive terminals at the bottom and core as the negative. Aqua Signal supplies positive and negative to poles only. That's why the led doesn't lit.
